European Union's new digital library overwhelmed on opening day

Mona LisaThe European Union's digital library, Europeana, opened on Thursday Nov. 20, only to be overwhelmed and crash. Inspired by ancient Alexandria's attempt to collect the world's knowledge, Europeana objective is to bring Europe's cultural heritage out of its museums and libraries and onto the internet.

The European Commission is behind Europeana and provides the annual budget of 2.5 million euros (US$3.15 million). At its launch commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said, "Europeana is much more than a library; it is a veritable dynamo to inspire 21st century Europeans to emulate the creativity of innovative forbears like the drivers of the Renaissance."

Auditors Clear EU Accounts - First Time Ever! Print E-mail

EurosA landmark occasion occurred in the European Union last week. For the first time ever, the European Court of Auditors gave a "clean bill of health" to the EU’s account. It has only taken 14 years.

Previously the Auditors had refused to endorse the accounts, although it found the accounts themselves "reliable." This means that the European Commission had accurately recorded all transactions, assets and liabilities, but there were problems with how the money was used.

EU Defies China to Award Prize to Hu Jia Print E-mail

Chinese political activist wins Freedom of Thought award.

Hu Jia Zeng JinyanHu Jia, a prominent Chinese human rights activist and dissident, is the winner of this year's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. China's ambassador to the EU had warned that selecting Hu Jia would, "bring serious damage to China-EU relations." China issued a similar warning to Norway when Hu Jia was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The European Parliament has awarded the Sakharov Prize annually since 1988. The prize honours individuals or organizations for their efforts on behalf of human rights and against oppression and injustice. Previous recipients include Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and the Belarusian Association of Journalists. The prize is worth 50,000 Euros (US$65,000).

Worst EU Lobbying Awards 2008 Print E-mail

Nominations are in for the least sort after awards in Europe.

Voting has opened for the annual 'Worst EU Lobbying Awards'. The public are invited to visit this site, familiarize themselves with this year’s nominees and cast a vote for the most outrageous behaviour. There are two categories, "Worst EU Lobbying" and "Worst Conflict of Interest."

According to the organizers the idea behind the awards is, "to discourage controversial lobbying practices by exposing them to the public." This is the fourth year the competition has been held and it promises to be a close race.

Eurozone Countries Agree Bank Rescue Plan Print E-mail

Meeting at the weekend in Paris, the heads of states of the eurozone have agreed a response to the banking crises. The eurozone comprises the 15 countries that use the euro. This meeting was the first such, since the euro was launched in 1999.

The three key components of the plan are

  • Countries will inject capital into their banks if necessary by buying preference shares
  • Countries will guarantee interbank leading until the end of next year
  • The European Central Bank will attempt to boost liquidity

The eurozone states have based their plan on the £500 billion (US$865 billion) UK plan announced last week. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown attended the eurozone meeting even though the UK is not a member.

European Parliament Backs Off Blog Regulation Print E-mail

The European Parliament has passed a resolution urging the European Commission and member states, "to safeguard media pluralism." The resolution also calls for, "an open discussion on all issues relating to the status of weblogs."

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted 307 to 262 on Sep. 25, in support of the resolution, based on a report produced this summer by the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Education.

Dutch Veto EU - Serbia Trade Accord Print E-mail

EU member states again fail to reach consensus on external relations.

A meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, Sep. 15, failed to agree to unblock a trade accord with Serbia. Twenty-five EU member states and the EU Commission were in favor of immediately implementing the deal. However, The Netherlands vetoed the accord. Insisting Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military chief, be first delivered to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.

Mladic and Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic are charged with, among other things, genocide relating to events in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica in 1995. This is a sensitive issue for The Dutch. Dutch UN peacekeepers that were present in the town at the time. Karadzic was arrested in the Serbian capital Belgrade in July but Mladic is still at large.

The EU Unites Over Georgia Print E-mail

"Relations between the EU and Russia have reached a crossroads."

At an extraordinary meeting in Brussels on Monday, Sep. 1, the European Council considered the European Union's (EU) response to the Russian-Georgian conflict and Russia's subsequent recognition of parts of Georgia as independent states.

The European Council consists of the 27 heads of the EU member states. France currently holds the rotating presidency. French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, called the first emergency summit since 2003 to find a united response to the conflicts in the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

A small European Union youth organization, the Young European Federalists has rattled cages. The minor think tank normally attracts little attention, but one of their sillier ideas has outraged the, even sillier, UK Euro-phobes.

In an open letter, the group, normally known by its French acronym JEF, called for a "EU Olympic Team," as "a way to combat nationalism that is always very fast in spreading on these sportive occasions.".

Karadzic Trial Begins Print E-mail

After nearly 13 years on the run, former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic made his first appearance at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, Holland.

On Thursday, Karadzic was read the 11 counts of war crimes, including genocide, with which he is charged. He notified the court that he intends to represent himself, and declined to enter a plea. He has 30 day to do so. Judge Alphons Orie adjourned the case until Aug. 29.
