Boris Tadic has been reelected President of Serbia. Tadic, who is pro-European Union, won 50.5 percent of the vote in the second round run-off. His opponent, the nationalist Tomislav Nikolic, admitted defeat after polling 47.9 percent of the vote. The EU is committed to raising the share of biofuels used in transport to 10 per cent by 2020. However, a number of reports including one from the OECD in Sep. 2007 and one published in Science last week, have caste doubts on the sustainability of biofuels.

Building a new generation of nuclear power plants

On Thursday, Business Secretary John Hutton announced the British government's much delayed energy policy. This makes nuclear power pivotal for future electricity production in the United Kingdom.

Hutton told members of Parliament that "new nuclear power should play a role in providing the U.K. with clean, secure and affordable energy," and saying it is "in our country's vital long-term interest."
